Que/qui fait la dynamique d’une discussion dans un forum comme celui de “Dieu et la science, incompatible ?” [Sur-la-Toile] ?
La personne qui a posé la question initialement, le 09-05-2005, n’est plus présente, ni sur ce fil de discussion particulier, ni par ailleurs Sur-la-Toile.
Il y a eu 477 messages jusqu’au moment ou j’ai fait les relevés (dernier post par tofu, le 01-10-2006 à 12:40) Ils sont repartis de façon particulière. Au début une discussion qui évolue lentement, pas entretenue par la personne qui l’a initiée, puis deux périodes ou la discussion s’intensifie.

La première accélération correspond aux premières interventions de Jean Staune (a), qui est également responsable du deuxième burst (b). Il est évident que ses positions sont discutables et discutées. Mais pourquoi Jean Staune prend de son temps pour contribuer au forum ? Il n’est pas du genre à vraiment discuter ses positions, et encore moins gratuitement.
Il semble plutôt qu’il cherche de la matière ! Habitué des copier/coller il est en train de chercher de quoi … remplir son bouquin ?!

Il ne lance pas un nouveau fil de discussion, il en exploite un qui est probablement suivi par les habitués du forum, détourne la question à son gré de façon provocatrice et profite pour faire son catalogue de contre-arguments et sa bibliographie, les deux fournis par ses opposants. Jean a pigé le principe de l’exploitation de la matière grise “over the Net” et il s’en sert, loin d’être quand même un commoner, ça sera son bouqin qui triomphera.
Bien entendu les questions vraiment embarrassantes sont simplement éludées et il brode sur celles qui peuvent admettre quelques artifices : raisonnement circulaire, argumentum ad ignoratiam, fausses analogies, etc. A croire qu’il est en train de vouloir épuiser les illusions logiques 
Je pense qu’il sera plus utile de le laisser mariner dans son jus, le temps qu’il ponde son bouquin, puis commencer à argumenter, comme j’ai estimé que c’est intéressant de faire pour le cas des Kallima

Tu réussi à faire passer une insulte pour un compliment, parce que la qualité de la source teinte le propos.
Puisque une critique de ton prochain livre t’intéresse tellement, rendez-vous pris dès sa sortie.
Je me ferai un plaisir de m’y pencher sérieusement. Mais il n’est pas question que je contribue aux copier/coller brillants d’un auteur comme toi.
Je me réserve pour une critique après la diffusion de la première édition.

Hello and welcome.
“Serious academic debate” with Jean Staune is probably a non-sens and that is the point I would like to make.
Now, I can just state that and go back to my every day occupations and Jean will claim that I’m unable to discuss with him, because he is right and I don’t have arguments against whatever he supports.
Or, I can give him the opportunity, for a public debate, and showcase that he is unable to support it otherwise than by using fallacious arguments.
I think the worst attitude would be to ignore the UIP and Jean Staune and let them pretend that they are displaying “scientific arguments supporting that science should welcome religion”.
Such attitudes come to the incredible but true result of more than 50% of american believing that darwinism is false; lack of education and public debates IMO.
Your assessment, I’m sure, is correct and your concern regarding slippery characters like Staune legitimate. However, I think we need to be extremely careful when dealing with people like this as they are above all masters in the art of concealing their underlying motivations. I don’t know Jean Staune personally but here in the US similar individuals operate by assuming airs of scientific respectability (familiarizing themselves with scientific jargon or organizing ‘scientific’ conferences in halls hired from unsuspecting universities). They seize every opportunity to participate in debates alongside distinguished members of the academic establishment. Even debates they are bound to lose, because what’s important – you understand – is not the substance of the debate but the image, the photograph, and the powerful illusion of respectability it conveys. And you can be sure that the target audience of these people is surely not the educated elite (far too discerning!). Oh no, it’s precisely the 1/2 of the population that is – as you point out – scientifically illiterate and therefore far easier to manipulate. It’s a simple but devastatingly effective method and one that certainly needs to be clearly understood if its effects are to be contained – perhaps thanks to websites like yours.

You are right, Jean Staune use and even abuse of his acquaintances with scientists and Nobel laureates. But for him I’m a second order biologist, so he have nothing to gain discussing with me.
But he should do so if he want to keep some respectability over the Net.
The main idea, here and elsewhere (fr), is to oppose to each false argument he is providing to support crypto-neo-creationism a clear statement of the absence of proofs and the logical illusions used. And eventually a demonstration that the actual theory of evolution is good enough to answer questions.
He need to conquer a market share (he is a business man), we should try to diminish it as much as possible, if we think that is immoral to profit from people’s credulity and lack of scientific education.
I’ve just followed your ‘elsewere’ link (above) to the page about creationism and various forms of neocreationism in France. I’m not sure I understand all the French (I spent a year in Lille as a student but that was a long time ago now) but I’m interested to note that the John Templeton Foundation is mentioned. They are in a peculiar situation in the States as they are openly engaged in promoting research in the area of science and religion, yet they claim to be wholeheartedly anti-Intelligent Design. Their claim, if I’m not mistaken, is that it’s possible to have a meaningful science-religion dialogue without giving up on the mainstays of rigorous scientific enquiry (including methodological materialism). It’s not position I find convincing but there’s no doubt that they are more evenhanded and cautious in their approach than many other science-denying groups such as the Discovery Institute and their creationist allies.
The ‘elswere’ link is about evolution, not neocreationism !
